WAFU U-17: Eaglets punch ticket to AFCON with win over Burkina Faso
Nigeria’s U-17 national team have sealed their place in the final after their 1-0 win over Burkina Faso at the ongoing West African Football Union (WAFU) U-17 cup in Lome, Togo.
The Golden Eaglets defeated Burkina Faso by the narrowest of margins to earn the big progress, which also confirms their qualification for the 2021 AFCON U-17 which will be staged in Morocco later this year.
After a frustrating and goalless first-half for the Nigerians, it was Michael Papo that broke the deadlock for Fatai Amoo’s wards on 77 minutes, against the run of play as at that time.
Papo had previously missed a couple of chances to earn Nigeria the lead in the first period, but there was no stopping him from close range in the final 15 minutes of the encounter.
After the forward’s opener, the Burkina Babes continued to pile on the pressure against the Eaglets but the Nigerians’ resolute defending ensured they ran out winners.
Nigeria will now face the winner of the other semi-final encounter between Cote d’Ivoire and Niger Republic which will be played alter on Friday night.
