U-17 FIFA WC: Tijani hits brace as Golden Eaglets seal comeback win over Hungary
The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria kicked off their campaign at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup on an emphatic note at the Estadio Olimpico, Goiania in Brazil on Saturday night as they delivered a big fight back to beat Hungary 4-2 in the opening Group B game.
Manu Garba’s boys had to net three late goals to seal a comeback after a lackluster performance in the opening half saw them trail 1-2. Captain Samson Tijani netted a brace, with Oluwatimilehin Adeniyi and Usman Ibrahim also finding the net to earn the Eaglets a flying start.
Hungary took to a dominant start in the early stages as Gyorgy Komaromi beat goalkeeper Daniel Jinadu at his near post with a header from close range just after three minutes.
The Eaglets yielded a good response and were awarded a penalty which Captain Tijani converted for the equalizer on 20 minutes. The Hungarians however regained their lead just eight minutes later when Samuel Major’s thunderous strike from the center of the box found the top corner.
It was all Nigeria in the second-half with the European side sitting deep in their own half and seldom threatening with counter-attacking forays.
The Eaglets pressure finally paid off in the 79th minute as Ibrahim netted a glancing header from the center of the box to get Nigeria back on level terms. Adeniyi made it 3-2 just a minute later, heading in a cross past Krisztian Hegyi at the near post.
Tijani then completed the comeback with a cracking effort, which took a sharp deflection, from a free-kick 25 yards out.
With the win on Saturday night, the Eaglets sit momentarily top of Group B with three points, pending the result of the other group game between Ecuador and Australia.
The Nigerian youngsters’ matchday two fixture is against Ecuador on Tuesday, October 29.
