Tokyo Olympics 2020: FIBA confirms D’Tigers, D’Tigress group opponents for Basketball Tournament

Nigeria’s women basketball team, D’Tigress have been drawn with host Japan, World Champions USA and France in Group B of the 2020 women’s Olympics Basketball Tournament.

The draw, which was held behind closed doors at the FIBA headquarters – the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball, saw 12 qualified countries allocated to three groups of four teams each for the women’s competition scheduled to take center stage between July 26 and August 8, 2021.

The reigning African champions Nigeria will begin their chase for gold at the Olympics against titleholders USA on Tuesday, July 27.

In a related news, D’Tigers were also drawn into Group B for the men’s basketball tournament.

Eight teams already qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics through the 2019 FIBA World Cup and the remaining four spots will be decided through the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments which will staged four cities, namely Victoria, Split, Kaunas, and Belgrade from June 29 to July 4, 2021.

The winners from each qualifying tournament will fill up the four positions yet left vacant at the Olympics.

D’Tigers will slug it out with Australia as well as the winners of the qualifying tournament in Split and Belgrade in the group stage of the Olympics. Notably, the 2015 AfroBasket champions have never made it out of the group stage of the Olympics, but they will be hoping they turn the corner this time and reach the knockout phase of the competition for the first time.
