Okagbare clocks 11.07s at Shanghai Diamond League, books place in Olympics & World Champs
Blessing Okagbare clocked a Season Best 11.07s (+0.2m/s) to finish 2nd in the women’s 100m of the Shanghai Diamond League, punching her tickets to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the World Athletics Championship billed for Doha in September.
In what was just her second outing in the 2019 season, the Nigerian speedster displayed courage and determination as she built on a decent start and mounted pressure on USA’s Aleia Hobbs, who took the win on the line with a time of 11.03s.
2018 USA Champion, Hobbs got to a brilliant start on lane 7 before seeing her lead threatened by a resurgent Okagbare, who came quite strong in the last 50m of the race. The American however dipped in smartly to take win on the line with double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson, who was solid on her return, finishing 3rd with a time of 11.14s.
Notably, Okagbare’s 11.07s was well sufficient to earn her a place in the 100m events of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (standard being 11.15s) just as the World Championships in Doha (standard being 11.24s).
Having secured qualification for aforementioned international competitions, Okagbare may now focus on preparing for them even as she hopes to build on her decent start to the season.
Earlier in May, the 30-year-old clocked 23.14s to finish 3rd in the 200m at the 1st leg of the Diamond League in Doha.
