Nigerian sprinters, Favour Ofili and Rosemary Chukwuma produced brilliant performances in the 200m Girls’ and Women’s final respectively to win Gold for Team Nigeria on Day 4 of the CAA U18 & U20 African Championships ongoing in Abidjan.
Having been crowned 400m champion earlier in the Championships, Ofili went for double sprints glory in the Girls’ 200m final on Friday, outclassing the rest of the field to clinch Gold.
In amazing fashion, the 16-year-old clocked a PB of 23.39s to inspire a 1-2 finish for Team Nigeria in the event with Anita Taviore bouncing back from her 100m disappointment to finish 2nd and bag Silver.
Rosemary Chukwuma was the other standout athlete for Team Nigeria on the day as she also struck a second sprints Gold in the 200m final at the Championships, having claimed victory in the Women’s 100m final two days earlier.
Chukwuma dug deep to produce her best performance of the season yet in the 200m, clocking 23.81s to finish 1st ahead of the rest of the field to bag Gold.
Nigeria’s duo of Enoch Adegoke and Favour Ekpekpe missed out of a podium place in the 200m final with the duo finishing 4th and 5th respectively.
Having bagged Gold in the U18 Boys’ High Jump final on the opening day, Best Erhire put in another decent performance to clinch Silver medal in the Boys’ Triple Jump final on Friday evening.
Meanwhile, in the last two events of the day, Team Nigeria clinched Gold medals in the 4x400m finals of the women’s and men’s category.
Day 5, being the last day of Championships, will feature a couple of events finals and Team Nigeria will be hoping to pick as many medals as possible, as the competition comes to a close on Saturday.
