Nigeria’s Men’s Team bag Gold, Women’s Team lose in final at ITTF Africa Championships
Nigeria’s men’s Table Tennis team emerged champions in the men’s team event at the ITTF Africa Senior Championships in Mauritius after defeating their counterparts from Egypt 3-1 in the final of the competition on Wednesday.
Nigerian Superstar Aruna Quadri and Veteran Segun Toriola secured vitals wins in their respective games to help the team to victory.
In the first game, Aruna piped Sale Ahmed 3-2 (11-9,9-11,11-3,9-11,11-2) to earn Nigeria the lead, but it was not to last long as Nigeria’s Bode Abiodun suffered a 3-0 loss (10-12,9-11,4-11) to El Beiali Mohamed in the second game.
Thereafter, Toriola handed back the lead to Nigeria as he defeated Assar Khalid 3-2 (13-11,1-11,8-11,11-8,11-8) to make the scoreline 2-1 after the third game.
Aruna sealed the win with an emphatic 3-2 win (5-11,11-7,11-13,11-5,11-6) over Mohamed in the fourth game.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s women’s team were defeated 3-1 by Egypt in the final of the event.
Nigeria trailed after game 1 as Offiong Edem lost 3-1 (11-5,4-11,11-3, 11-4) to Egypt’s Dina Meshref. However, Funke Oshonaike defeated Abdel Aziz Farah 3-2 (11-6,5-11,11-5,9-11,11-13) in the second game to draw the Nigerian team level.
Helmy Yousra restored Egypt’s lead in the third game as she defeated Effiom Janet 3-1 (11-8,4-11,11-4,11-9).
The Nigerian team missed out of being Champions as Oshonaike suffered a 3-0 loss (13-11,11-8,11-6) to Meshref in the fourth game.
