Nigeria’s men basketball team D’Tigers staged a massive upset to defeat a star-studded USA team 90-87 in an exhibition game played in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night (local time).

As part of their preparation for the coming Tokyo 2020 Olympics, D’Tigers arrived Vegas earlier this month to play a series of exhibition games against elite teams from across the world, and they did well to start the mini-tournament on a quite impressive note last night.

The Nigerian team were trailing by only two points at half-time after a dogged showing in defence and some excellent shot attempts from beyond the arc. Keeping it a two-point game against a team that featured NBA superstar Kevin Durant, Dame Lillard, Bam Adebayo and the likes after two quarters was, of course, a serious feat on its own.

To the surprise of all, D’Tigers came back stronger in the 3rd quarter and showed they wanted it more. The attempted more shots from beyond the arc this time (made a massive seven) and overturned the game to lead the Americans 66-64.

They were even more brilliant in the final quarter and deservingly they got themselves an eight point lead one minute to the end of the game. The Americans tried to fight back from there but it was too late as D’Tigers smartly managed the game and claimed what will be a famous win for years to come.

Indeed, it’s the very first time an African nation will defeat the USA in a basketball match, and who else deserves this but the Nigerian national team who have recorded massive improvement since same USA thrashed their Olympic team 156-73 at the London Games in 2012.

Nigeria will next play Argentina in continuation of their exhibition series on Monday. Lastly they will lock horns with Austrialia on Wednesday.
