Liebherr 2018: Quadri, Abiodun star as Team Nigeria defeat Australia
Team Nigeria recorded a gallant victory over Australia in their final Group F fixture on Day 4 of the Liebherr 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships.
Fresh from massive victory over Bulgaria on Wednesday morning, Aruna Quadri, Bode Abiodun and Olajide Omotayo worked out a 3-0 win against Australia.
Nigeria’s starman Quadri eased past Benjamin Gould 3-0 [11-5, 11-9, 11-7] in Game 1 as he gave Nigeria the edge early in the contest.
Abiodun, who was benched for the team’s last two matches, showed no sign of rustiness as he defeated Kane Townsend 3-0 [12-10, 11-2, 11-9] in the second game of the contest.
Youngster Omotayo sealed up victory for the team in Game 3 as he managed to edge Rohan Dhooria 3-2 [11-6, 11-13, 12-14, 11-8, 11-3].
Following the triumph, the Nigerian team are placed second in Group F with nine points, with top-placed Slovakia with ten points.
Nigeria thus qualify for the knockout phase of the tourney. The draws will for the second stage of the competition will be held on Wednesday, 9pm [Nigerian time].
