Liebherr 2018: Aruna Quadri inspires team to victory over Argentina on Day 2
Team post brilliant comeback to win match 3-1
Nigerian table tennis team at the ongoing Liebherr 2018 World Championships in Sweden posted an excellent comeback to defeat their Argentine counterparts 3-1 on Day 2.
Aruna Quadri picked two games, Olajide Omotayo won one as Nigeria sealed a second victory in as many games in Group F in the Men’s 2nd Division on Monday.
Veteran Segun Toriola lost Game 1 to Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes 3-0 [12-10, 15-13, 11-9] as the Nigeria began the contest on an unfavourable note.
Quadri however took on Game 2 clash against Gaston Alto with so much ease as he conquered the Argentine 0-3 [6-11, 7-11, 7-11].
In Game 3, Omotayo got the better of Nicolas Galvano as he rallied back to win 2-3 [9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 10-12, 3-11] after going 2-1 down.
Afterwards, 29-year-old Quadri completed the comeback for the team with a another 3-0 triumph – this time against Cifuentes in Game 4. The ping pong star eased to a 9-11, 6-11, 7-11 win to seal victory for Nigeria.
The win keeps Nigeria in joint top spot with Slovakia. Both teams, who have garnered four points each, will square up on Day 3 by 12 noon.
