Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho has won the Premier League Player of the Month award for March 2021.

The in-form Leicester City ace scored five goals in the three Premier League appearances he made in the month, helping his side claim seven points out of a possible nine.

He opened the month with a decent display against Burnley at Turf Moor where he got the Foxes a vital equaliser so they could claim a point. Only three days later, he got to start the comeback for his side away at Brighton in a game that end 2-1. He then bagged his first Premier League hat-trick in the Foxes’ 5-0 rout of Sheffield.

He had to beat competition from seven other stars including Andreas Christensen (Chelsea), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Jesse Lingard (West Ham United), Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City), Illan Meslier (Leeds United), Luke Shaw (Manchester United) and Leandro Trossard (Brighton & Hove) on the nominees list to win the award.

Notably, he is the fourth Nigerian to win the prestigious accolade, following in the steps of Jay Jay Okocha, Peter Odemwingie and Odion Ighalo.

The Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers was left with no choice but to get the 24-year-old striker back in starting XI after the side was hit with an injury crisis late February with many of their midfield options sidelined. Iheanacho, who had previously only played a bit part role for the King Power outfits especially in the league this season, however took the initiative and gave Northern Irish gaffer more reasons to trust him going forward with the exceptional performances he’s delivered in the last few weeks.

The former Manchester City striker has been involved in exactly 40 Premier League goals [27 goals & 13 assists] in 133 appearances.
