The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria have advanced into the semi-finals of the 2021 WAFU-Zone B following Ivory Coast’s 3-1 win over Ghana on Tuesday evening.
Fatai Amoo’s men slip through with just one point – same as groupmate Ghana, who have been eliminated – but with a superior goal difference.
The Nigerian team lost their opening game 1-0 to Cote d’Ivoire last Wednessday, and their attempt to bounce back in the three-team Group B was somewhat thwarted after Ghana forced them to a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
The Ivorians – who already qualified following their outcome of Saturday’s game – have however done their Nigerian neighbours a big favour by defeating Ghana 3-1 today.
Now, Nigeria will slug it out with leaders of Group A Burkina Faso in the semis on Friday, while Cote d’Ivoire will square up to Niger in the other final-four encounter of the WAFU tournament.
A win for Nigeria in their next game will not only book them a ticket for the WAFU U-17 final, but also mean they have picked up one of the two automatic qualification spots to the AFCON U-17 available to the zone.
