Ese Brume clinches Long Jump Bronze in Doha
Ese Brume came to rescue for Team Nigeria at the World Athletics Championships in Doha, winning Bronze in the women’s Long Jump to put an end to a fruitless campaign for the country at the meet.
The three-time African Champion soared to 6.91m on her second attempt to finish 3rd in the final.
Malaika Mihambo leapt to a whooping World Lead (WL) of 7.30m to clinch the title while Ukraine’s Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk made 6.92m on her fifth attempt to clinch Silver.
Coming into the Championships with a Season’s Best of 7.05m, Brume was odds-on favourite for a medal placement in the event. Fortunately, she didn’t disappoint.
On Saturday, she eased past the qualification round, clinching an automatic ticket after her first attempt with a massive jump of 6.89m.
She got off to a bright start in the final on Sunday evening, leaping to the 6.83m on her first attempt to take the lead before consolidating just after with another massive 6.91m.
Germany’s Mihambo however pulled a big one on her third attempt, soaring to 7.30m to displace the Nigerian at the top.
Thereafter, Bekh-Romanchuk, on her pen-ultimate attempt, leapt to 2nd place with 6.92m after Brume failed to improve on her mark.
Brume’s bronze puts an end to the Nigeria’s 6-year wait for a medal at the Worlds as the country’s last medal placement dates back to 2013 when Blessing Okagbare won Silver in same Long Jump.
