Nigeria’s Women Basketball team, D’Tigress have made it to a second consecutive final at the Women’s AfroBasket after defeating Mali 79-58 in the semi-finals at the Dakar Arena on Friday night.
A dominating first quarter performance followed by some good game management was all D’Tigress needed to get the better of the Mali team and secure a place In Sunday’s final.
It will be quite a memorable win for the Nigerian ladies who came into the game with an unfavourable (2-5) head-to-head record against their West African rivals.
On the heels of their quarter-winning streak since the start of the tournament, Otis Hughley’s ladies wasted no time in finding their feet as they established a 25-12 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Although the Malians came back strong in the second quarter with Valencia star Meiya Tirera proving her mettle, it was to little effect as they found their match in their opponents in white, trailing further by a point on scores for the second ten minutes.
D’Tigress finished off the job in the 3rd and final quarter, taking their lead further up by 7 points to seal a 79-58 win.
Evelyn Akhator was quite a standout performer for Nigeria, posting double figures in points (12) and rebounds (13). Meanwhile, D’Tigress had the individual with the most points & assists in Ezinne Kalu who scored a massive 19 points and delivered 5 assists.
D’Tigress will now look forward to a date with the winner of the other semi-final match between Senegal and Mozambique in the final of the tournament on Sunday, August 18.
