D’Tigress book Quarter-finals place with spirited victory over Greece
Nigeria women’s senior basketball team D’Tigress have for the first time in their history booked their place in the Quarter-finals of the FIBA Women’s World Cup.
The Nigerian ladies secured a spirited 57-56 victory over Greece to reach out to the last eight of the competition in Tenerife, Spain.
Being favourites to carry the day after some magical displays in the group stage of the competition, D’Tigress faced stern resistance from the Greeks in the opening quarter with both teams settling for a 15-15 tie after the first ten minutes.
D’Tigress had to turnaround what was a 7-point trail at some point in the second quarter to manage a 31-26 lead at half-time.
The Nigerian ladies went into a large-margin lead at the end of the third quarter (48-37) after some dominant play. They had their rebounding game on top level with Evelyn Akhator impressively leading the stat chart.
In the last minute of the final quarter, the Greeks gave the Nigerians a run for their money: the Europeans managed a shock lead but with less than 20 seconds left on the clock, D’Tigress had the final say with Elo Edeferioka bagging two vital points from free throws.
Akhator and Ezinne Kalu were the top performers in the game with 14 points each. Notably, Akhator managed a 13-rebound in another double-double performance (her fourth in as many games) in the win.
D’Tigress will now face big favourites USA in the Quarter-finals of the competition on Friday.
