CHAMPIONS AGAIN! D’Tigress retain Women’s AfroBasket title after spirited win over Senegal
Nigeria’s Women Basketball team, D’Tigress survived a late scare from Senegal to defeat the Lionesses 60-55 in a dramatic Women’s AfroBasket final staged at the center of a 15,000 home fans dominated crowd at the Dakar Arena on Sunday night.
In what unsurprisingly proved to be D’Tigress’ biggest test all tournament, they went into a commanding lead picking more points in the quarters up until the 4th.
However, there was a twist to the game in the final quarter as the Senegalese ladies fought back strong and cancelled out the 11 points lead with which their Nigerian counterparts entered the 4th quarter.
In less than no time, Senegal scored 12 unreplied points in the first five minutes of the last quarter, but just when they thought they had set the tone for a big comeback, D’Tigress’ individual quality came to bear and helped silence the teeming home crowd.
Evelyn Akhator, Ezinne Kalu and Promise Amakamara combined beautifully to secure vital points as the final quarter inconsequently went to Senegal 18-12.
Akhator emerged the top performer of the game having scored a game-high 14 points and made 9 rebounds and 2 steals.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Kalu was thereafter named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament with herself and Akhator also making the tournament’s All-Star Five.
