Afrobasket Qualifiers: Agada, Ireogbu shine as D’Tigers record big win over South Sudan

Nigeria’s national basketball team, D’Tigers got their qualification campaign for the 2021 AfroBasket off to a flying start with a big win over South Sudan at the Kigali Arena on Thursday.

In a game which was only Coach Mike Brown’s first in charge of the Nigerian team, Hapoel Be’er Sheva’s Caleb Agada and Ike Ireogbu starred as Nigeria eased to a 76-56 win over their East African opposition.

The 2015 AfroBasket champions quickly stamped their authority right from the 1st quarter of the game, leading 22-17 at the end of the the first ten minutes. Point Guard Ireogbu was noticeably the most clinical Nigerian on the court in the period, scoring 10 points with two of his shots coming from outside the perimeter.

D’Tigers then stretched their lead much further in the 2nd quarter, increasing the margin by 12 points. South Sudan however gave the Nigerians a little scare in the 3rd quarter (15-20), cutting five points off the deficit.

Brown’s men however came back stronger in the last quarter and played a controlled game to restore their dominance and eventually beat the South Sudanese by 20 points.

Agada topscored in the match with 16 points, Ireogbu finished with 13 points while team captain Ike Diogu got 11 points. Ireogbu had the most assists (8) and Amaze Egekeze made the most rebounds (9).

D’Tigers next game is against hosts Rwanda on Saturday.
