Adekuoroye to lead Nigeria’s three-wrestler contingent to World Championships in Belgrade
Odunayo Adekuoroye, Blessing Oborududu and Aminat Adeniyi are the wrestlers penciled down to represent Nigeria at the forthcoming senior World Wrestling Championships billed for Belgrade.
The three Nigerian wrestling sensations will be seeing action at the Serbian capital for the first time since their participation in the 2020 African Championships in Algeria back in February. The long period of inactivity is largely due to the global coronavirus crisis but Team Nigeria won’t be passing up a chance at returning to global competition in Belgrade as, according to Nation Sports, Youth & Sports Minister Sunday Dare has approved that a small group represents the country at the competition.
The Championships, scheduled to hold between December 12-20, will see two-time Commonwealth champion Adekuoroye (57kg) gunning for a first Gold medal at the competition having previously won Silver in 2017 and Bronze medals in the 2015 and 2019 editions. Oborududu (68kg) and Adeniyi (62kg), who are also commonwealth champions, will both be hoping to adding a World Championships medal, for the first time, to their decent list of honours.
At their most recent appearances in Algeria, 26-year-old Adekuoroye then leapt to world number 1 after clinching the African title in the 57kg event, Oborududu also won Gold in the 68kg category while Adeniyi got Bronze in the 62kg.
