2018 Summit League: Abire makes new mark in Long Jump, Triple Jump events; Etim wins Gold in 100m, 200m

ORU Track and Field athletes Mercy Abire and Aniekeme Etim made dazzling feats at the just concluded Summit League in Tulsa.

Abire dug deep to produce a lifetime best 6.50m leap to win the Long Jump event on Day 1. Her feat on Friday surpassed her school’s record just as it also set up a new record for Nigeria in the event.

On Saturday, the Nigerian sensation was spot on yet again as she emerged champion in the Triple Jump event. She recorded a 13.10m leap, beating South Dakota’s Thompson (12.99m) and NDSU’s Jensen (12.82m) to the the title.

Abire’s compatriot, Etim also added to ORU’s medal haul in the sprints at the Championship as she finished first in the women’s 100m and 200m events.

Etim clocked 11.25secs, upstaging her rivals to finish first in the 100m race. Later in the day, the Nigerian athlete went on finish the 200m race in a dazzling 23.54secs.

Abire and Etim also played a key role as ORU’s 4x100m quartet claimed gold medal in the event with a time record of 45.48secs.

Notably, the Nigerian duo were honoured with MVP Awards in their respective athletic events – Etim bagged the accolade in the Track Championship while Abire was presented the Field MVP Award.
